Many Albertans are concerned about the future of the Athabasca River Basin. They understand that protecting water sources is more than an environmental issue; it's about ensuring we have clean drinking water, recreation opportunities and reliable water supplies. Protecting the watershed means protecting our health and quality of life, and other species that rely on the river.

We want to know about your connection to the Athabasca, and if you are concerned about the impacts of industry or environmental effects such as climate change that are threatening the future of the Athabasca River Basin.

What Can I Write About?

You are welcome to tell us about you connection to the river, and voice your concerns and expectations on any issue related to the Athabasca River Basin. While the Athabasca Expedition highlights the impacts of oil sands development on the Athabasca, you may have other concerns that you'd like to share.

A few questions you may want to ask yourself include:

• What is my connection to the Athabasca River Basin?
• How has development along the Athabasca River and within the basin affected my quality of life?
  
• What are my expectations of government and industry in terms of ensuring clean water, land and air, and protecting the health and well-being of my community?
  

• Do I want more emphasis placed on protecting Alberta's rivers and watersheds?
• What are my concerns about the impacts of oil sands development and other industry on the river basin?
• Do I want to see the pace of oil sands development slow down, or regulations enforced that will minimize the ecological footprint of oil sands mining on the landscape?
  

Your views will be compiled and delivered to the government to ensure decision makers are aware of Albertans' concerns and expectations regarding development in the Athabasca region.

With your permission, we'll share your story with other Albertans to help raise awareness of important issues affecting the Athabasca River Basin.

We'll also deliver your message to the Government of Alberta to ensure that decision makers understand the importance of the river to Albertans and are aware of their expectations regarding the management of the watershed and the use of water resources.
